What is professional dental cleaning?
During professional dental cleaning we remove stubborn deposits and tartar that you can no longer reach at home with a toothbrush and floss. We also clean thoroughly between the teeth and along the gum line.
Finally, the teeth are polished and, if desired, protected with fluoride. The treatment is a key building block of prevention and complements your daily care.
Why prevention pays off
Bacterial deposits are the main cause of decay and gum inflammation. Removing them regularly lowers the risk of cavities and periodontitis – an inflammation that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss.
Healthy gums and clean teeth also affect general well-being. Prevention is usually gentler and simpler than treatment later on.
How the appointment works
First we check your teeth and gums and, if needed, make deposits visible with a dye. Then tartar and discolouration are removed with gentle instruments and ultrasound.
This is followed by polishing the tooth surfaces so new deposits settle less easily. Finally we give you concrete tips for your care at home – tailored to your situation.
How often does cleaning make sense?
For many people, one to two appointments per year are a good guide. The actual need, however, depends on your individual situation – for example the condition of your gums, dental prostheses or braces.
At your check-up we discuss together which rhythm makes sense for you. That way your prevention stays tailored to you.
Caring for your teeth at home
Brush twice a day for about two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, and clean between your teeth once a day with floss or interdental brushes. A soft to medium brush protects the gums.
A low-sugar diet and enough water help too. The best care at home and regular prevention at the practice complement each other – together they keep your teeth healthy long-term.
Frequently asked questions
How often should you have a professional cleaning?
Often one to two appointments per year make sense. The exact rhythm depends on your individual situation and is decided together at your check-up.
Does professional cleaning hurt?
The treatment is usually well tolerated. With sensitive gums or exposed tooth necks we proceed especially gently – just let us know.
Does cleaning replace brushing at home?
No. Professional cleaning complements your daily care but does not replace it. Thorough brushing and cleaning between the teeth at home remain the foundation.
