The difference in brief
In Austria there are public-insurance services and private-choice (Wahlarzt) services. For public-insurance services the practice bills your statutory health insurer directly – you present your e-card for this.
For private-choice services you first receive an invoice (Honorarnote), which you pay and then submit to your insurer. Part of the amount is reimbursed to you.
What the insurer covers
Many basic services such as check-ups and certain treatments are public-insurance services and are billed via the e-card. The exact scope depends on the rules of your health insurer (such as ÖGK, BVAEB or SVS).
Not all services are fully covered – for some you pay a deductible or a surcharge for a higher-quality option. We clarify what applies in your case transparently in advance.
Private-choice dentist: how reimbursement works
As a private-choice patient you first pay the invoice yourself. You then submit it to your health insurer – nowadays usually conveniently online.
The insurer reimburses a share of the public tariff. The amount depends on the specific service and your insurance. For legal reasons we do not state specific amounts on the website, but we inform you before every treatment.
How we handle it at our practice
At the Dr. Shko Atta Ali practice in Hallein we value transparency: before a treatment we discuss which services are possible as public-insurance services and where costs may arise for you.
That way you can decide calmly – with no surprises on the bill. We are always happy to answer questions about billing.
Our tips on billing
Bring your e-card to every appointment. Keep invoices and receipts safe and submit them to your insurer promptly.
When in doubt, ask before treatment which costs will arise. A short cost overview beforehand creates clarity and trust.
